How to Start a Blog in Under 8 Minutes- Plus a FREE Checklist
How to Start a Blog in Under 8 Minutes
Starting a blog was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and over the last year, has turned into my full-time job. However, when I was first starting out, I was terrified of the technical side. I remember spending hours on YouTube watching tutorials and then trying to test them out myself. Luckily, setting up a blog is actually pretty easy to do. Today I’m going to show you step-by-step instructions on how to set up your very own blog.
A blogging platform is a software that is designed to turn a regular website into a blog. WordPress.org is one of the most popular blogging platforms out there and my personal favorite. I’ve always used WordPress.org because it gives me full control over my site. It allows me to monetize my blog, there are unlimited customization options, and it comes with hundreds of free themes and plugins.
WordPress.org vs. WordPress.com
When I was first starting out, I didn’t know the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com so I wanted to make sure to explain it here. WordPress.com is another blogging platform and is extremely popular because you can set up your blog for free. The only problem is it comes with quite a few limitations. It only offers limited amount of space, you can’t integrate e-commerce features, and your domain will include wordpress.com inside of it (yourdomain.wordpress.com). If you’re blogging as a hobby, WordPress.com can be a great option. However, if you want to monetize your blog, need more flexibility, and want a more professional look, WordPress.com may not be your best choice.
Hosting Your Blog
When you’re starting a blog, you will also need to find a hosting service. If you’re not familiar with this term, think of it as renting an apartment for your blog. Bluehost is my favorite hosting site and has always been incredibly reliable, easy to use, and has a 30-day-money-back guarantee. Their plans start out at as little as $3.95 per month, come with a FREE domain name, and automatically sync up with WordPress.org. Plus, when you go through The Collective Mill’s link, you get TCM’s Starter Kit which comes with 10 blog headers + 6 stock photos + 3 blogging worksheets. CHECK IT OUT HERE!
Are you ready to start a blog? Let’s do this!
Step 1: Head Over to Bluehost
The first thing you want to do is head over to Bluehost. (f you’re interested in the starter kit bonus, use this link.) Once you’re there, click on the “Get Started Now” button.
Step 2: Select Your Plan
Your next step is to select a plan. There are three different options depending on your needs and budget. I personally recommend the basic plan which is only $3.95 per month. Plus, if you decide you want to upgrade down the road, you always can.
Step 3: Choose Your Domain
Now it’s time to choose your domain name. Your domain name should highlight you and your brand, so take some time to think it over. Also, a lot of domain names are already taken. Do some research ahead of time to make sure the one you want is still available.
Step 4: Enter Your Account Information
On the next screen, Bluehost is going to ask you to enter your account information. This includes your name, business name, address, phone number, and email address.
Step 5: Confirm Your Package
Now it’s time to confirm your package. You can choose a 12 month, 24 month, or 36 month plan. If you choose the 36 month plan, it’s only $3.95 per month. However, if you’re just starting out, you may want to choose the 12 month plan. I broke up each plan and the total cost below:
▶︎ 12 Month Plan: $5.95 x 12 = $71.40
▶︎ 24 Month Plan: $4.95 x 24 = $118.80
▶︎ 36 Month Plan: $3.95 x 36 = $142.20
When you’re confirming your package, Bluehost also offers additional add-ons. I personally skipped this except for the Domain Privacy Protection. This will keep your personal information private. However, if you use a PO Box, it’s not crucial to add on.
Step 6: Enter Your Billing Information
The next step is to enter your billing information. This includes your credit card number, expiration date, and CVV2 code.
Step 7: Set Up Your Password
Congratulations! You’re officially a part of the Bluehost family. Click on “Create Your Password” to go to the next page.
Step 8: Log Into Your Bluehost Account
Now it’s time to log into your account.
Step 9: Install WordPress
Once you’re logged in, Bluehost will bring you to your cPanel which is where you can make any changes to your account. Click on the “Install WordPress” button.
This will bring you to the MOJO Marketplace where you can install WordPress. Click on the “Start” button.
Step 10: Select Your Domain Name
On the next screen, it’s going to ask you which domain name you want to install. Choose the one you just registered.
Step 11: Finish Setting Up Your WordPress Account
On the next page, you’re going to choose your site name, your admin username (which can be an email address or just a regular username), your admin password, and your admin email address. Once you’re done, click “Install Now”.
Step 12: Wait for the Installation Process
The installation process will start!
And when it’s complete, it will look like this:
Step 13: Pick Out a Theme
Once WordPress has been installed, it’s time to pick out your theme. Click on “Browse All Themes” to find one that matches your brand.
Step 14: Log Into Your WordPress Account
Once you have your theme, log into your WordPress account.
Step 15: Browse Your Dashboard
Below is what your brand new WordPress dashboard will look like. To publish your first article, hover over the “Posts” button on the left-hand side and click “Add New”.
Step 16: Publish Your First Post
Once you’re there, it’s time to write your first post. All you have to do is create a title, write your article, click publish, and you’re done!
